Critical game studies – workshops Week 3

I’ve played a few red and white family computer (FC) Nintendo video games when I was small. One of my favourite is the Contra (I can’t remember which version was it exact) develop in 1987 by Konami. It was very popular at the time and have published to other console. The game is great because of its simple and successful Game Play; it is 2d arcade platforms shoot them up, offers 2 player co-op, the player (usually) runs from left to right, shoots every aliens that moves and collect six different weapons, there are no health so it is a one hit kill game, that’s about all the rules in contra. The game features attractive 2d graphic varies of enemy and each level has a boss fight in the end. Although you can only use only of the six weapons in the game but they are very well balanced and interesting. Compares to the other contemporary games it has the same feeling of simple game play, however, it is totally different when you starts playing it, you wants to simply keep playing it and not throw away the controller after 3 minutes, for it’s successful game play.
